M'rashtra assembly off to a shaky start

Last Updated 12 December 2011, 18:06 IST

The House was adjourned thrice during the day's proceedings, witnessing vociferous shouting from the Opposition benches demanding that MSP for cotton should be hiked to Rs 6,000 per quintal.

Following the adjournment at noon, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan tabled a condolence resolution as a mark of respect to the former members of the House.

The House paid tributes to Dattatray Patil, Ganpati Lad, Vitthal Kaldate, Shashishekhar Athalye, Ramrao Yadav Lonikar, Gajanan Loke,  Narayanbhau Bahekar, Bhausaheb Deshmukh, Navneetbhai Barshikar and Hamumant Bobde.

Soon after the condolence resolution, the Opposition’s voices rose in unison, demanding a discussion on the cotton MSP. Some of the Opposition members even brought cotton staples to the house and handed it over to the chief minister as a gift.
Even as the chairperson tried to bring some semblance of order to the ruckus created by the Opposition, the House had to be adjourned.

But even after a 10-minute break, the Opposition began shouting slogans, rushed into the well and gheraoed the chairperson’s table the moment the House resumed.
