Tech spanner in parking lot works

Glitch hits Sarojini Nagar facility, NMDC looks at other options for BKS Marg

The operational glitch at a parking facility in Sarojini Nagar, which also uses a similar technology, has forced the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to look for other technological options.

The state-of-the-art facility at Sarojini Nagar has come under severe criticism for the processing time involved in parking and retrieving a car from the parking lot.

The facility at Connaught Place was expected to be inaugurated early next year. “The start will take some time because we want to sort out the issue of processing time of parking and retrieval of cars, which according to the agreement with DLF must not exceed three minutes. We are also analysing other technologies such as being used at the upcoming parking at the Delhi High Court premises,” said O P Mishra, Director (Projects), NDMC.

Both the Sarojini Nagar and Connaught Place parking facility are being constructed on the public-private-partnership model by the NDMC and DLF.

When asked about the lack of a ramp at the upcoming multi-level parking lots that could have helped in manually parking or retrieving cars in case of a technical glitch, Mishra said the available space was not enough to provide for both facilties.

“Firstly, we had conceived a fully automated parking facility. Moreover, the available space was not enough to provide for both options,” Mishra said.

BKS Marg will provide parking for 1,408 vehicles that will help ease chaos at Connaught Place. Twenty-five per cent of the space at the parking lot will be for commercial purposes.

Mishra rubbished the idea of using the space, which has been developed as a shopping mall by the DLF, for making an alternative ramp “as no private firm will invest of Rs 100 crore without benefiting financially from the project”.
