Congress Working Committee member Oscar Fernandes on Saturday said party President Sonia Gandhi has approved Raj Babbar’s candidature.
Babbar was a Samajwadi Party (SP) MP in the 14th Lok Sabha. But, he rebelled against the party top brass and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha poll from the Fatehpur Sikri constituency as a Congress candidate.
The byelection was necessitated as SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh Yadav decided to resign from the Firozabad constituency. Akhilesh had won from both Firozabad and Kannauj constituencies in the Lok Sabha elections.
