Modi murder case accused gets life term

Modi was gunned down on July 28, 1988, when he came out of the K D Singh Babu stadium in the city after a practice session.

The murder of Modi had hogged limelight then and the UP government had recommended a CBI inquiry into it.

The CBI had filed charge sheets against Congress MP Sanjay Singh, his wife Amita  and former Congress MLA from Rae Bareli Akhilesh Singh but they were later absolved of the charges by the court.

Incidentally,  Amita  then was the wife of Modi. She married Sanjay Singh two years after Modi’s murder. The court found the accused Bhagawati Singh guilty of Section 302 of the IPC and the Arms Act. Besides being given the lifer, a fine of Rs 40,000 was also imposed on him.
