Despite several awareness programmes being organised by elected representatives and officials, the district hasn’t been able to match the expected progress. The programme aims to construct more than 1.10 lakh toilets in the houses of BPL card holders, but until now only 49,665 have been built. Under the programme, BPL families are provided with a financial assistance of Rs 3,700.

The district has 28,797 APL card holders and 7,438 have constructed toilets until now. However, no financial assistance is given to APL card holders.

Out of the 269 toilets planned to be constructed in the schools, 266 have been completed.

Of the 861 anganwadis, 846 have toilets and 22 community toilets are constructed as against the 50 planned. The expenditure until now is Rs 10.10 crore and one more year is left for the completion of the project.

While total sanitation programme doesn’t provide financial assistance for APL families, they can make use of the facility under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Zilla panchayat deputy secretary S V Padmanabha told Deccan Herald that measures are being taken to construct toilets within the stipulated time frame. Programmes have been held to improve awareness among people in the rural areas.

Eleven grama panchayats are preparing to compete for the Nirmala Grama Puraskar in the district. A central inspection team is expected to visit the grama panchayats soon.
