An adaptation of Molier’s bourgeoise gentleman, a team of over 15 Rangayana artistes are staging the play, Rangayana director B V Rajaram told media here on Tuesday. The play will be staged for general public on December 17 and 18 at 6.30 pm.

On the play, Rajaram said it’s a take on current society- from politics to social development among others.

It showcases the transformation of elites who later embrace culture.

He highlighted that Prasanna who had been at the helm of affairs as the director of the repertory earlier, is directing the play. He had been here for two months honing further skills of the artistes.

Most importantly, the play is an opportunity for the repertory to woo those, who of late have stayed away from theatre. Especially the younger generation for whom theatre sounds anew.

For youths

Targeting youths, the repertory has already staged the particular play for 70 students from different colleges on December 12 and 13. It will be staged again on December 15 and 16 at 4 pm.

The entry is free for students on said dates. However, he clarified that the entry for the play on December 17 and 18 is only through ticket.

Letters had been written to 15 colleges in the city to send the students for the play. The response has been encouraging, Rajaram claimed.

Posters of the play were also released. Deputy director of Rangayana Nirmala Matapati was present.

Prasanna rebukes pre-release hypes

Renowned theatre director Prasanna on Tuesday said that theatre should always remain a force with people’s support. At the same time, it should be headed by a professional rather than succumbing to favouritism.

In an informal chat with media persons, Prasanna referred to Rangayana branches opened at Shimoga and Dharwad. The government is yet to chalk out programmes and ideas that could make the repertory reach the masses in the said districts. The Nataka Akademi should promote the revolution (read theatre).

He pooh-poohed the trend of pre-release (staging in case of play) programmes to promote the mediums of art. Without mincing words he said, “Let people watch the play (En huchchoori...) and give their mandate. If it’s good fine, if its bad... thoo antha ugiri (let them spit).”

For media too his advice was simple and straight- watch the play and review it.

Referring to doyen of theatre Gubbi Veeranna, Prasanna said he (Gubbi Veeranna) became popular for his productions reaching the people. Similarly, Rangayana should be run as a professional organisation.
