Sharma was shot in his cheek by one of the two assailants; the bullet had pierced through the scruff of his neck. The victim's wife, Ritu Sharma told Deccan Herald, “My husband was strolling with his friends at the main road after eating his dinner.
There was a loud noise and he saw that two men were beating a police constable. Rajesh and his friends tried to disrupt the fight. One of the assailants brandished a gun and in the melee, shot my husband. The bullet pierced Rajesh’s cheek and came out of the scruff of his neck.”

Ritu, anxious about the health of her husband said he is presently out of danger. Sharma was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Center after he was shot. He was admitted at the ICU ward.

He has now been shifted to the normal ward. Ritu stated that there were several people who were just witness to the scene. They did not try to help. ”I am proud of my husband who at least had the guts to save the constable from being thrashed” she said. The hospital authorities said that Sharma will be discharged in the next two days as he is out of danger.

The Delhi Police Constable in this case -- Chander Vijay Singh -- was returning to Sarojini Nagar Police Station when he saw two drunk men sitting in a Santro Car at Netaji Market late at night. He asked them to leave. They complied. But Singh, on the way to the police station, was unaware that he was being chased by them. Only when they hit him from behind did he become aware of this. They thrashed him with a hammer and shot Sharma, who tried to save Singh.
