Rajinder alias Raju and Joginder were arrested after police received specific information that the duo murdered Banwari Lal last month for monetary gain. The 40-year-old was stabbed to death in his shop in Rajinder Park on November 12 .

The police said that Rajinder, who owned a footwear factory at Veena Enclave that ran into losses,  planned the murder in order to pay his creditors.

“As the creditors were pressing him to repay, Rajinder hatched a plan to rob a businessman. During Diwali time, he had visited the victim’s shop to purchase plywood and noticed that Lal used to be alone in his shop. He was also aware that Lal used to keep a large amount of cash in his office,” said ACP (West) V Renganathan.

After making a recce of the shop for several days, Rajinder discussed his one-time employee, Joginder, a plan to rob Lal. Joginder joined in the conspiracy. “Rajinder and Joginder visited the victim’s shop on November 12 pretending to be interesting in purchasing plywood. They stabbed Lal and decamped with his purse and other items,” Renganathan added. The two men changed their hideouts frequently to avoid arrest, but were tracked down in Paschim Vihar.

“On Wednesday, we received specific information that Rajinder and Joginder will be near District Centre at about 6 p.m. A team laid a trap and apprehended them. During  interrogation, they revealed how they committed the crime,” Renganathan said.

The police have also recovered the knife used to stab Lal, his purse and blood-stained clothes.
