According to police, the accident occurred around 5:15 pm on the elevated stretch connecting the Lodhi Colony area to Sarai Kale Khan when an NDMC dumper hit an electricity pole and fell on the autorickshaw. “It seems that after the collision, the electricity pole fell atop the dumper, threw it off balance and made it to fall on a TSR which was plying alongside. The pole also struck a biker who was travelling parallel the auto rickshaw,” said police.

The auto driver, Vijay Kumar, 29, from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and was residing in east Delhi’s Ganesh Nagar area, died instantly. His vehicle was reduced to a heap of metal.

Such was the impact of the hit that the biker, Sanjay Kumar, 28, a resident of the Sunlight Colony area, was sent him hurtling off the flyover and landed several feet below, police said. Vijay Kumar and Sanjay Kumar were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Center, where doctors pronounced them as brought dead on arrival.

Police said the errant dumper driver, Abdur Rehman, 26, who had been engaged by the NDMC on contract, was arrested.
