Students as Green Ambassadors

Last Updated 25 August 2009, 19:17 IST

The Green Ambassador scheme is part of ‘Sahayoga,’ a citizen participation initiative of the BBMP for the development of Bangalore. Under this scheme, the BBMP, with the help of school authorities, identifies school children with leadership qualities and make them Green Ambassadors. BBMP will distribute self-addressed cards to the headmasters who in turn distribute it to their Green Ambassadors.

The job of the Green Ambassadors is to give suggestions about how to keep the City green and clean. If they spot something odd happening in their vicinity, they should complain.
“Children observe so many things and they might want to complain without knowing the means or information to do so. Now we are supplying to them post-cards where they can write to us straightaway and we will act upon it,” said sources in the BBMP. It is not that only the designated Green Ambassadors have the right to write to the BBMP. Anyone can take post-cards from the Green Ambassadors and send them to the BBMP but the Green Ambassadors and the school teachers have to ensure that the letter is dropped in the post boxes.

Platform for students

For the success of the scheme, the BBMP Commissioner Bharatlal Meena had a meeting with the head masters of North Bangalore and deputy commissioner of public instruction of Bangalore North. Bharatlal said he was providing a platform to the school children to be active participants in making the city clean and green. Children should be guided to create awareness regarding environment, health, cleanliness and significance of greenery, he said. He also asked the children to send emails to him at his address commissioner@bmponline.org.
