Training manual for engineers

Last Updated 04 January 2012, 12:38 IST

Innovent Engineering Solutions Pvt Ltd recently launched the book, Engineering Critical Thinking (ECT), in an attempt to bridge the gap between academia and the engineering industry.

The book offers a fresh approach to the field, encouraging engineers to think laterally and inter-relate the varied facets. The book makes valuable insights into different situations such as industry scenarios, best practices and rigorous application of subject fundamentals.

Many of the existing textbooks comprehensively deal with one aspect of design but may not have an integrated approach needed for product development.

Engineering Critical Thinking  by Ganesha H N, Chief Technology Officer, Innovent Engineering Solutions, attempts to bridge the gap between university education and industrial application. A simple component, for example, may have to be looked at from different points of view such as stress, dynamics, vibration, life, assembly, manufacture, cost, weight, electrical properties and fire resistance. To meet these requirements, the book has seven chapters that cover these aspects systematically through theory and moderately complex situations relevant to the industry.

The book can be the ‘go-to material’ for young designers and analysts. Teachers also can use the book to train young engineers. Universities can use this book for a three-credit course at the UG or PG level to enhance competency and employability.

“Skill Assessment, a chapter in the book,  is very essential to engineering students. We have tried to provide  a clear road map for students, through it. First year students may begin with the chapter, Lateral Thinking. Second year students can learn Critical Thinking — work on designs, modules, etc. A third year student concentrates on Proficiency — a chapter that will help him/her improve on fundamentals. And in the fourth year, the emphasis is largely on Tools, to make the student industry-fit,” says, Siva Subramaniaan, Chairman and Managing Director, Innovent Engineering Solutions.
