Addressing the gathering as a chief guest on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebrations of Fr Muller School of Nursing at the Academy Hall of the Fr Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) here on Tuesday, Rev Moras said that the aim of Catholic institutions is to carry out the mission of Christ. He said that the fame of Fr Muller Institutions spread not only in India, but also across the world because of the excellence in service and the quality of education it renders.

“There was a time when society was looking at nursing as a dishonest profession. Many from upper class families were not willing to send their wards to study nursing. But institutions like Fr Muller changed the scenario and brought dignity back to the profession,” Rev Moras said.

Lauding the efforts of the Fr Muller Institutions management, he said “it was indeed a challenge to commence a nursing college 50 years ago. But the management and teachers of the institute succeeded in completing 50 years through dedication, excellence and hard work.”

Principal of L T College of Nursing, Mumbai, Prof Alka Kalambe speaking on the occasion, said that anybody can conquer and achieve their goal in life. “One need to possess qualities of positive attitude, discipline, dedication and also should follow the deadlines in work to develop themselves,” she added.

Medical Director of Al Rahaba Hospital, Abu Dhabi, Dr Nellie Shuri Boma said that the compassion involved in the nursing profession cannot be replaced by any other service. The role of nurses is such an important aspect that no amount of medicine can replace their services, she added.

“While the contributions of doctors in treating a patient is about 30 per cent, 70 per cent wrests upon God. But it is a nurse who heal the disease of a patient completely through care with compassion,” Boma said. The first principal of the Fr Muller School of Nursing Maria Theresa Fernandes acknowledging the felicitation said that the nursing profession has stepped into an advanced stage. More and more advanced techniques are being used in nursing profession. “But nurses should be well aware of the truth that human life is sacred. Hence nurses should care human life properly,” she advised.

The first batch nursing students of Fr Muller School of Nursing, which started in 1959, were felicitated by the guests. Similarly, felicitation was also extended to former principals, rank holders and staff members who rendered meritorious service for the institution.  Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza presided. Fr Muller School of Nursing Principal Winnifred D’Souza, Fr Muller College of Nursing Jecintha D’Souza and Fr Muller Charitable Institutions Director Fr Patrick Rodrigues were present.
