The students union of Jawaharlal Nehru University are expecting to hold the much-talked about JNUSU polls in the first week of February this year. The students union held a university general body meeting on Monday and passed a resolution in favour of elections to be held this year.

“The general consensus amongst all the students union is to hold the elections. There are few parties like Democratic Students’ Union (DSU), Progressive Students’ Union (PSU) and few others which are refusing to accept the terms and relaxations given by the Supreme Court over the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

But we feel there are many student-related issues which need to be sorted out. The time is less but we are prepared for the elections,” said Shefalika, member of All India Students' Association (AISA).

The apex court had put a stay on JNU elections in 2008 for not adhering to the election code of conduct recommended by the Lyngdoh committee. The court in December 2011, lifted the stay and relaxed some of the committee's recommendations. JNUSU had its last election in 2007 when AISA won all four posts.
