A tour operator and a taxi driver have been arrested for extorting and cheating a German couple who were on honeymoon to India, the police said on Tuesday.

Tour operator Jahangir Ahmed Wani of Jangpura was arrested from his office in Gole Market, while driver Rajender Singh of Najafgarh was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The action was taken after Kai Trostrum and Shirin, hailing from Bonn and who got married two years ago, lodged a complaint at the Indira Gandhi International Airport police station on Monday. The couple had arrived in the national capital on the night of January 5 at about 11:30 pm.

“They had hired a pre-paid taxi for a hotel in Paharganj, which was already booked by them online. The taxi driver, however, misguided them that there was no room available in hotels at Paharganj and took them to a travel agency in Gole Market,” said R A Sanjeev, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport).

Jahangir started telling them about tour programs and later forced them to pay Rs 1.16 lakh for a trip to Rajasthan.

“They were then dropped at a hotel in Pushkar. They were so much scared that without telling anything to anyone they left the hotel and came back to Delhi by bus via Jaipur. After that, they went to the German Embassy in Delhi and narrated the whole story,” Sanjeev said.

On the statement of the couple, both Jahangir and Rajender were arrested. “They have also confessed their crime,” Sanjeev added.
