India's envoy to the UN Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri yesterday handed over the one million dollar cheque, the Indian government's contribution to the core voluntary budget of UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women).
The contribution constitutes the second installment of India's multi-year pledge to provide five million dollars as funding to UN Women's resources.

The cheque was received by Michele Bachelet, Under Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women.

Puri reaffirmed India's "steadfast commitment" to the goals of gender equality, empowerment of women and gender mainstreaming enshrined in the mandate of UN Women.

India is currently one of the members of the Executive Board of the UN Women, where Indian diplomat Lakshmi Puri serves as Deputy Executive Director, Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships Bureau and Assistant Secretary-General
