Authentic Chinese cuisine with an affordable price tag seems rather hard to find but for nearly 12 years, ‘Green Onion’ has been serving its customers some of the most delicious Chinese dishes. Located on Residency Cross Road, the place is the regular haunt of students, professionals and families alike.

Apart from the good quality of food here, it’s the price of the items that really catches one’s eye. A meal for two will not cost more than Rs 200 and if one is a vegetarian, it is far more cheaper. “Since we are centrally located, we have many competitors but when people come here, they are amazed to get such good quality food at an affordable range,” says Asif Iqbal, the owner of the eatery.

When the place was opened, it served Chinese as well as other cuisines but looking at the demand for Chinese food, Asif decided to concentrate only on Chinese. His chefs have been with him ever since he started the restaurant.

“Usually Chinese food served in the City is a version adapted to the Indian palate. At ‘Green Onion’, chefs have been specially brought from Darjeeling. Since they have been trained by Chinese chefs, they work hard to ensure that the spices and ingredients they select do not give the food an ‘Indian’ tang,” adds Asif. Chefs Robin and Tshrine Lepcha have ensured that they maintain the same taste for a decade. “People come here looking for that taste. So we can’t disappoint them,” says Robin.  

The place can cater up to 50 people at a time and the friendly staff here help you out if you are confused on what to order. A must have here is the ‘chicken lollipop’ and ‘pepper lemon chicken’. Vegetarians can try the pepper-fried vegetables. Amit, who works at the eatery says, “A popular dish here is the ‘mancho’ soup, which is thick garlic flavoured soup with crispy noodle toppings.”
Krishna, a regular at the eatery, says that he enjoys the ‘Green Onion fried rice’ and the ‘chicken lollipop’. “Every time I crave for some good Chinese food, I come here. Their portions are really good and even the taste has remained the same all these years,” he adds.
