Former Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde said that the people’s representatives should be made to realise that they are public servants and are chosen to serve the people and not to overrule.

Speaking after inaugurating the decennial celebrations of Flowers of Paradise Public School at Malpe on Friday, he said that these days people’s representatives are ashamed to be called as public servants.

They assume that serving people is a cheap job to do. When these people come seeking votes, public should tell them straight on the face that they are meant to work for the people.

He said, in the backdrop of increasing corruption, there is a need for peaceful revolution to change the entire scenario. Friction and greediness are increasing never like before in the society and it is not possible to convince adults against corruption. “However, I make an attempt wherever I go to urge the youth to take up the path that is against corruption. They should be the harbingers to bring change in the corrupt atmosphere. The desire to earn more has ended up in countless scams in the society,” he said.

He regretted that the democratic values are less understood by the people today. In democracy, the highest office is held by citizens, he added.

Stating that there is a need to include subjects like civics and moral science in the school curriculum, Hegde said value based education should be inculcated among children.
