Even as the Commonwealth Games 2010, is mostly remembered for alleged high-level corruption, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday said hosting the CWG had set a benchmark for future venues and Delhi earned lots of accolades for the same.

“Not only the Games went well but our city got applause for perfectly hosting the largest international sports event. Delhi is being quoted as a model in the run-up to Olympics in London,” said Dikshit in her address at Chhatrasal Stadium during a state-level Republic Day celebration.

Using the platform to list achievements of her 14-year tenure, Dikshit said there had been a sea change in the condition of the Capital compared with the Bharatiya Janata Party tenure, and people are satisfied with present supply of water and electricity.

“The generation of power within Delhi has been started after a long gap of 15 years. The power rates in Delhi are the lowest compared with neighbouring states and other metros. The city government is concentrating on water supply and development in more and more unauthorised colonies,” said Dikshit. She added that Delhiites could boast of having the widest and fine road infrastructure and that government was committed to increasing fleet of public transport up to 10,000 buses in the next few years.

Dikshit said health infrastructure was expanding to reach every corner of the city while several new hospitals are being constructed.

“Delhi today is a hub of medical tourism. We have been catering to the needs of a large number of patients coming from other states. Our hospitals like Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya and Maulana Azad Dental College have received national accreditation. Our world class Liver Institute and Delhi Cancer Institute have been catering to large number of patients,” she added. “The Delhi government has also announced the opening of first separate University of Technology for women.”

Dikshit described trifurcation of MCD as a historical and significant decision which will bring municipal administration close to people.

“The new set up will go a long way in fulfilling aspirations of people at the local level. The efficiency and quality of services will improve,” she said.

“Delhi is now termed an international city, having all modern infrastructure and much improved civic sense. “We are aspiring to have the status of a world heritage city as Delhi is a historical and prominent city with a composite culture and a unique blend of modern and ancient architecture.”
