Adarsh-style housing scam in M'rashtra again

Last Updated 31 January 2012, 20:15 IST

In a scam similar to Adarsh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday carried out flash raids on two senior retired army officials and Kalpatru builders in Pune for allegedly manipulating documents to sell off a Rs 46 crore worth defence housing plot meant for ex-army personnel.

Kalpatru Builders are also facing CBI investigations for alleged manipulation of documents of a defence plot in Mumbai's far-flung western suburb of Kandivli, unearthed after the Adarsh Housing scam in 2010.

Giving details of the case, Joint Director (Western Region) Rishi Raj Singh told Deccan Herald, “We registered a case of cheating against Lt Gen (Rtd) GOC-in-C Nobel Thamburaj , Defence Estate Officer-Southern Command, Pune Circle (Rtd) and M/s Kalpatru Builders.
“While the case was registered on Monday, the searches of their premises were initiated Tuesday morning, and documents seized were being scrutinised.”

According to Singh, “The Defence Ministry had asked us to look into the matter wherein the two retired army officials had shown undue favours to M/s Kalpatru Builders for a plot measuring .962 acres located in B-3 Defence Land at Pune Cantonment.”

Preliminary investigations reveal that the two retired army officials had found that some of the housing contenders went to court as the builder was violating the norms and agreement by trying tosell off some of the apartments to civilians.

The court gave its ruling in favour of army, but Thamburaj and Nayyar on a sly settled the matter out of court, amounting to a gross misconduct of public servants rules and regulations.

According to CBI, the violation of the terms of lease entered by Defence Ministry with the builder, has helped “M/s Kalpatru Builders pecuniary advantage to the tune of Rs 46 crore without any public interest.” According to CBI the raids are being carried out on the residence Thamburaj at Fatima Nagar, (Pune,) Nayyar's house at Lulla Nagar, Kondhwa (Pune) and M/s Kalpatru Builders, Koregaon Park (Pune.)
