Stealing a puppy almost cost a young student his life when an enraged MCD employee and his relatives allegedly opened fire at him in outer Delhi, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Bajitpur village in Outer Delhi's Bawana on January 19 and Karambir alias Sonu, the MCD employee, was arrested yesterday, B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), said.

Hitesh (21) complained to police that he was threatened by one Monu and later he along with Manjeet, Karambir, Leelu and Vineet came to his farm. Monu allegedly fired at the complainant on his left thigh before fleeing.

"Yesterday we got a tip off that Karambir would come to Bajitpur Village to meet his family members. We laid a trap at Dhansa Bandh near Dhansa village and arrested him," Jaiswal said.

Initially, Jaiswal claimed, Karambir tried to mislead police by claiming that Hitesh tried to attack them. "However, later he broke down and disclosed that Hitesh had stolen their puppy which annoyed them. They decided to kill him. On January 19, Hitesh was found sitting alone in the fields in his village. He and his associates then opened fire at Hitesh," police said.

He told police that Vineet allegedly arranged pistol and associate Monu brought the car. Karambir, a Class XII pass, is currently working as a beldar in MCD.

"He is a short tempered, alcoholic. He is infamous in his locality for his quarrelsome behavior. He has been previously involved in two cases," Jaiswal alleged.
