Traffic police to organise Lok Adalat

Coming Sunday, the city police are organising a mega ‘Lok Adalat’ along with the Delhi Legal Service Authority (DLSA) giving denizens a chance to settle their pending traffic challans.

Apart from traffic challans, people would also have a chance of special plea-bargaining on non-compoundable traffic offences at the adalat on February 5 at six district courts in Saket, Dwarka, Patiala House, Rohini, Tis Hazari and Karkardooma.

According to law, officers of the rank of ASI and above of Delhi Traffic Police have the powers to prosecute violators on the spot and also compound their traffic violations. In case, a violator chooses to go to court or if it is a non-compoundable traffic violation, then the challan will be sent to the court.

The first such adalat was held on September 8 and 9 in 2007, during which 42,567 cases were disposed of and compounding fees of Rs 58.21 lakh were realised. Following this, similar adalat sessions were held on December 9 and 16 in the same year during which 38,316 traffic challans were settled. The third adalat was held in May 2008 in which 22,938 cases were settled followed by one in September 2008 in which 6,214 cases were settled. Another Lok Adalat held in November 2008 saw 11,403 cases settled.
