Additional secretary, ministry of health and family welfare, Keshav Desiraju launched a new network link between All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (Aiish) and 10 remote centres allowing students in all these centres to access digital resources, online journals and e-books of Aiish digital library.

The remote centres are located at New Delhi, Puducherry, Mumbai, Shimla, Lucknow, Ranchi, Cuttack, Jabalpur, Ajmer and Bhagalpur. Aiish had earlier introduced video-conferencing in these centres for conducting diploma courses. With the introduction of this new network link, computers connected at the remote centre would become a part of the Aiish network and would have access to all information communication and technology resources.

Speaking on the occasion, additional director general of health services Dr B D Athani said developing such a service would help students from remote areas to gain knowledge about healthcare. As shortage of manpower affects all programmes related to healthcare, he said if the network link proves to be successful then it would help train workers at the grassroots level.

He observed that the new link would act as a means of providing high standard of healthcare services to remote areas. The facility could be used as a model to train more healthcare professionals, he added.

The new network allows students to access Aiish digital library, which includes online access to 62 international journals, 138 e-books, international databases and national media library. Also students from remote centres can use the intranet and e-mail services provided by Aiish. Live observation of diagnostic and therapeutic activities at the clinical services department can also be availed. Tele-diagnosis and tele-rehabilitation by professionals at Aiish can also be seen.

Aiish director Dr S R Savithri, head of electronics department Ajish K Abraham and others were present.
