He was defeated in the by-election to the Govindarajnagar Assembly seat. Governor H R Bharadwaj has accepted the resignation, which was forwarded by Chief Minister Yeddyurappa.  Somanna, before putting in his resignation papers, took the blessings of Siddaganga seer in Tumkur. Later, he arrived with his two sons at the CM’s chamber in Vidhana Soudha.

CM’s advice
Yeddyurappa, speaking to reporters, said Somanna had offered to quit as minister on the day results were announced. “I had requested him not to take any hasty decision,” the CM said and added he has not yet decided on the new post to be offered to Somanna. It is learnt that the chief minister may not immediately fill up the post vacated by Somanna.
Somanna claimed that he was quitting on moral grounds.  “It was a plot by the JD(S) and the Congress to defeat me and the CM. Let all good happen to both the parties who defeated me. I never expected that the JD(S) leaders and Siddaramaiah would work against me,” he said.
