Boy mowed down by speeding car

A seven-year-old boy was crushed to death by a speeding car in Geeta Colony area of east Delhi late on Wednesday night, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Hemant Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar. He was in Shankar Nagar with his family to attend a marriage ceremony when the incident took place at around 11.20 pm.

“The victim was crossing a road in front of a banquet hall with his sister, Rajrani, when a speeding Maruti Wagon R car hit and ran over him,” a police official said.
People in the vicinity rushed to help Hemant, who fell unconscious after the accident. He was taken to nearby Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The enraged bystanders caught the car’s driver and his three friends and beat them up.

“They managed to escape but left their car behind, which was later wrecked by the locals,” the official added. Hemant’s family claims that the four men were inebriated. Later the police arrested a 42-year-old man after investigating about the owner of the car.

“Ajay Sharma was arrested 12 hours after the accident, therefore we cannot establish whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” the official said. However, bottles of alcohol have been recovered from the vehicle, he added.
A case of rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against Ajay at Geeta Colony police station.
