<p>Vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) H S Sriprakash on Wednesday advised the nursing students to develop discipline, determination and compassion in making a career.<br /><br /></p>.<p>He was addressing the 15th batch of basic B Sc nursing students of JSS Nursing College here at the lamp lighting and oath taking ceremony.<br /><br />Taking note of increasing number of students especially outsiders opting for the course, the vice-chancellor appealed to them to learn the local language, besides being abreast of newer technologies. <br /><br />Describing teaching and medicine as the noblest professions, the V-C narrated the story of Florence Nightingale who sacrificed her affluent life for the cause of mankind. <br /><br />She tended to wounded soldiers with commitment making the very profession a noble and sacred one. Saying that by joining the course, the students are provided with a key, the V-C asked the students to use the key to unlock the treasure trove of knowledge.<br /><br />Principal of College of Nursing, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans) Ramachandra wanted the students to be a human first to serve humanity.<br /><br />Quoting Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, Ramachandra said the poet laureate had rightly described the students as tapasvis. <br /><br />Taking cue from that, Ramachandra hailed the girl students as ‘tapasvinis’. It’s only through hardwork one can achieve satisfaction. <br /><br />He said nothing equals the bliss of sacrifice and stressed on dominating passion for service.<br /><br />He also had a piece of advise for faculty when there are incidents of teachers helping their pupils in malpracticing. <br /><br />As many as 42 students were administered customary oath with lamps in hand. Students who won accolades in various competitions during the recently concluded Suttur jatra and cadets who participated in R-Day parade were also honoured. <br /><br />Executive secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha B N Betkerur, director of medical education R Mahesh, principal of JSS Nursing College Sheela Williams, nursing superintendent of JSS Hospital, Gayathramma K, associate professor of the college Usha M Thomas and others were present.<br /></p>
