The Election Commission has sent a notice to Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal for his comments on imposition of President’s rule in Uttar Pradesh, which the poll panel considers a violation of the model code of conduct.

Jaiswal, on Thursday, had said, “If Congress gets majority then it will form the government... In case we don’t get clear majority we sit in the opposition and I see no alternative but governor’s rule.”

Acting on complaints by the BJP and the SP, the EC said: “The Commission is prima facie satisfied that Jaiswal by making the aforesaid uncalled for statement has threatened the voters of districts going to polls in phase 6 and 7 to either vote for his party or face imposition of President rule in UP, thus has violated the Model Code of Conduct.” Jaiswal has been asked to reply by February 27.
