In a short span of six months the office has been shifted twice

In less than six months, the tourism department in Mysore has shifted again to a new premises, albeit on a temporary basis.

The office of the deputy director, tourism department is now functioning at Dasara Exhibition Grounds at Doddakere Maidan. It was shifted here one month ago from Mayura Yatri Nivas building on JLB road. However, the relief here is the address will remain the same for at least one year till the department shifts to new and own building.

Sources told Deccan Herald, the department was earlier housed in old exhibition building (Government Medical College (now Mysore Medical College and Research Institute)). Just a few days ahead of Dasara last year, the office was shifted to Hotel Mayura Yatri Nivas premises. The authorities had almost settled besides getting acclimatised to the new place, when the higher ups decided to construct a sophisticated building as a permanent facility.

As a result, the office was shifted again to the existing place. As Dasara Exhibition Grounds is now under the control of Tourism Department, it wasn’t difficult for the department to get the space for free without paying rent. The grounds earlier was managed by Kannada and Culture department.

When the office was shifted ahead of Nada Habba Mysore Dasara, many had vociferously opposed the decision as it was untimely according to them. Their primary concern was the tourists again for whom the office in old exhibition building was very familiar. All they wanted was the office to function in the centre of the city. Now, with the office shifted to exhibition grounds, barring those associated with the realm, many others are still unaware of the new address.

Amid this, the good news is that the post of the assistant director, who was heading the department here, has been upgraded to that of deputy director for tourism.
