The campus of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) looked different on Saturday.

The students were out of their technical routine and were involved in literary activities.
The motto of ‘Shabd’, an annual literary event organised by the college, is to bring out students’ creativity. The event is being conducted by the editorial board of the college magazine ‘Jayzina’ since eight years. Deccan Herald is a media partner for the event.

Students from all technical colleges in Mysore and technical, non-technical and medical college students from all over Karnataka participate in competitions.

The inauguration of the two-day event was organised at the auditorium of SJCE on Saturday. Chief executive of projects JSS Mahavidyapeeth B M Umakanth said, it is a good thing that a technical college has come up with such literary and cultural events.

Vice-principal of the college Shakeeb Ur Rehman said the literary event has a long way to go. “There is a notion that people in technical field and corporates lack soft skills. Through the event it should be made known that we are no less in these skills,” he said. He called upon the students to ‘make some noise’ to make the event successful to suit its name.

Professor in civil engineering and staff advisor to the editorial board S K Prasad said when literary activities were getting lesser priority, the editorial board came up with an idea to conduct ‘Shabd’, which in coming years would be a brand name for literary activities and literary skills.

Principal B G Sangameshwar said: “Shabd is making the right sounds. It needs to grow further. More and more technical colleges should participate in the event.”
Editor in chief Namratha Shenoy and Deccan Herald Mysore Bureau chief Niranjan Nikam were present.

A photography workshop on ‘Street and Portrait Photography’ was conducted by Sumukh Bharadwaj. Mock CAT event saw a participation of around 50 students, while pictionary had the highest number of participants with 60 teams. English quiz had 30 tems to participate and spell bee, a new event pulled a good number of students. Kannada debate and Kannada quiz had enthusiastic participants.

The event will continue on February 26 with activities of ‘Jest a minute(JAM)’, English debate, poetry, creative writing and finals of pictionary.
