Last Updated 26 February 2012, 18:32 IST

Concerns were raised on the safety of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) kept at the Government Polytechnic campus here after it was found that water had seeped into the strong room where the sealed EVMs were kept.

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday rushed its observers to assess the situation. According to sources, the strong room could be opened to ascertain whether the EVMs were damaged.

The strong room was sealed on February 19 after the conclusion of the polling here. The EVMs of the Sarojini Nagar Assembly constituency have been kept there, sources said.

District magistrate Anil Sagar said no damage has been caused to the EVMs. The two observers on Sunday reached the Polytechnic and assessed the situation. Spots of water were found outside the doors of the strong room, sources said.
According to sources, security personnel observed water flowing out of the room and informed the district administration.

In the adjoining Hardoi district, there was a rat scare at the strong room where the EVMs have been kept. The strong room was part of a granary, hence the administration was apprehensive of  rats chewing the seal of the EVMs. Sources said the district administration was taking necessary action.
