A tempo owner was arrested in the capital for allegedly transporting illicit liquor to Uttar Pradesh and 105 boxes of liquor of various brands were recovered from his possession, police said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided vehicles at Nehru Place in south Delhi yesterday and recovered the illicit liquor from a tempo. The tempo driver identified as Rakesh Pawar (42), a resident of Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested. Illicit liquor boxes made for sale in Haryana only were found in Pawar’s possession.

During interrogation, the accused said he used to deal with the selling of jaggery from Ghaziabad to Haryana.

When he realised that rates of liquor in Haryana are very less compare to the rates in UP, he started transporting and supplying liquor from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh.

Demand for liquor escalated at election time and he began supplying it at higher rates for huge profits.
