A team of doctors from Omega Hospital performed a rare heart surgery and removed a tumour from a patient and restored normal functioning of the heart, which otherwise would have resulted in sudden death.

According to a press release, a 32-year- old male patient was suffering with fever for the last 20 days and had a history of breathlessness on climbing stairs.

Echo showed a large ball like tumour occupying the whole right atrium, which was obstructing the right sided tricuspid valve during different phases of heart beat and reducing blood flow to the lungs. He was further evaluated by MDCT Angio, which confirmed the presence of tumour in the right side of the heart.

A open heart surgery was performed on February 24 by Omega Hospital Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr A G Jayakrishnan, Senior Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon Dr K T Anand, Senior Cardiac Anesthetist Dr Chethana Anand, Senior Clinical Perfusionist Ganapathy Bhat and Physician Assistant Vinay.

The surgeons used a heart lung machine and stopped the heart. The tumour was removed in total. The patient had an uneventful recovery and will be discharged soon.
