Students of Yuvaraja’s College staged a snap stir against their principal S N Gayathri here on Monday and shouted slogans against her.

They alleged that the principal had made disparaging remarks against students who had met her in connection with celebrating Dr Ambedkar memorial day in the college. Students said celebrating the memorial day was being postponed for the last month and half and there was no sign of the occasion being held anytime soon. Stating that the college followed a tradition of having a day dedicated to the memory of the greatest leader, who was the architect of Indian constitution, since past many years, the students said the principal was discriminating against students based on their caste.

The students said the principal was planning to silence the Dalit voices in the college and was a complete misfit to the college with such history of diversity and heritage.

Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore Prof V G Talwar, who arrived at the college after receiving information about the strike by students, met them and promised to look into the matter.

“This would be taken up at the Syndicate meeting too,” he said. After having received these assurances, the students dropped the protest. Tight security was provided in the college premises, in the wake of this protest. Police left the premises only after the vice chancellor spoke to them.
