Monk jailed in China after medicinal liquor kills woman

 A Monk in a Buddhist temple here has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following death of one of his patients from a homemade ''medicinal liquor'' provided as a treatment by him.

The monk, surnamed Yu, an abbot of the temple in Changping district in the northern suburbs of Beijing had been administering a self-made "medicinal liquor" to cure patients, claiming it to be an "ancestral secret recipe" made from different traditional Chinese medicines, official media here reported.

He landed in trouble after a 25-year-old woman patient surnamed Zhang died after taking the medicine for her rheumatic problems. Zhang showed symptoms of poisoning.
Subsequently Forensic doctors found that she had died from an aconitine substance found in the "medicinal liquor," said a spokesman of the District Court which sentenced him to 10 year imprisonment.

Prosecutors said that Yu had not obtained a permit to practice medicine, and the monk was jailed after being found guilty of illegally practicing medicine, Xinhua reported.
Yu confessed to his crimes and it was not clear whether he would lodge an appeal, the report said.
