The Congress’ star campaigners put in an appearance to seek votes for the party’s candidate in the Lok Sabha bypoll - Jayaprakash Hegde - on Wednesday.

Actors Bhavana and Adi Lokesh were officially inducted into the party at the Congress office in the city. Actress Umashree, who accompanied them in the campaigning, said: “The Congress has a history of more than 120 years. It is the only secular party which can provide good governance treating all castes and religions as equal.”

Bhavana said she was happy to be part of the Congress which had contributed immensely to the progress of the nation.

“The party has given outstanding leaders who have sacrificed their lives for the country,” she said. Adi Lokesh said Rahul Gandhi was his role model and he desired to work with him. He always wanted to join Congress, Lokesh added.

Actress Ramya is in the district to campaign extensively for the party candidate. She left for Kundapur on Wednesday evening. Speaking to reporters during her visit to Krishna temple, Ramya said she will hold a padayatra on the streets of Udupi on Thursday.

Actress Tara campaigned for the BJP last week and actor Jaggesh is expected to campaign for the party in the next two days. JD(S)’ star campaigner Pooja Gandhi had visited the district at the beginning of the poll campaign to mobilise support for the party at the grassroots level.
