South off to winning start

Skipper Satish Viswanathan made 64 (50b, 11x4, 1x6) to help South Zone stun defending champions West Zone by eight wickets on the opening day of the SJFI inter-zonal JK Bose Twenty20 cricket tournament on Wednesday.

West reached 174 for seven from their 20 overs but South stormed to victory with eight wickets and 13 deliveries to spare.

In the day’s other game, North Zone outplayed East Zone by 92 runs.

Brief scores: West Zone: 174/7 in 20 overs (Devendra Pandey 43, Abhijit Kulkarni 32) lt to South Zone: 176/2 in 17.5 overs (Satish Viswanathan 64, Roshan Thyagarajan 26, R Sathish Paul 30 n.o., Mallikacharan Wadi 28 n.o.).

North: 170/3 in 20 overs (Amit Choudhary 85 n.o.) bt East Zone: 78 all out (Rakesh Thapliyal 6-8).
