Green honour for BIAL

Last Updated 22 March 2012, 20:26 IST

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), on Thursday, claimed to be the first company in the country to be certified as a Green company by the GBC of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in adherence to its GreenCo Rating System.

“Yet another milestone in the company’s green initiatives, the BIAL has been certified by the CII as a Green company,” said the BIAL authorities in a statement.

The first-of-its-kind in the world, the GreenCo rating system assesses and analyses the impact of a company’s activities on the environment. The rating helps in defining the path forward to ecologically sustainable business growth. The BIAL has been credited as GreenCo Silver rated company.

Initiated by the CII GBC, the certification programme was officially launched by the Union Minister for Energy in February last year.

Speaking on the occasion, S Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII-Godrej GBC said: “BIAL has demonstrated its passion and commitment towards fostering and promoting growth that is ecologically sustainable.”

In the future, the CII is confident that many more companies will tread the green path and pave the way for a safe and sustainable tomorrow.

“The certification is the recognition of a series of green initiatives adopted by the BIAL over a period of time, such as its  water conservation programme and its recent partnership with the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board (KSBDB) for adoption of biofuel in its operations,” the BIAL said.
