The ailing nonagenarian politician, who slippled while going to the washroom, suffered a minor injury in his left leg. He has been given medicine by the doctor," one of his personal aides said.

The 95-year-old CPM politburo member, who resides in the township of Salt Lake near the city, is a voter in the Barasat Lok Sabha constituency in North 24 Parganas district.
However, this is the first time in the  past 63 years that Basu could not exercise his franchise.

Under observation

“Jyoti Basu is now under medical supervision at home. But doctors said there's no cause for worry. He is now resting," Ghosh said.

Efforts to organise a polling booth at Indira Bhavan, the official residence of Basu, to enable the ailing former chief minister to vote did not materialise, as the state chief electoral officer Debashish Sen turned down the request citing rules.

In 1946, Basu contested his maiden election to the Bengal Provincial Assembly from the Railways Reserved constituency. The veteran Marxist leader has a blood clot in the brain following a fall at his residence in September last year. The doctors had advised surgery but he declined.
