Cleaning water tanks takes a back seat

Seven water tanks under CMC limits yet to be cleaned

With the onset of summer, the city municipal council (CMC) here is struggling to provide adequate drinking water to the residents of the city. Meanwhile, the residents are questioning if the water supplied now is clean enough for drinking.

Drinking water is supplied to the city from T Narsipur. The CMC has constructed five water tanks with a capacity of 10 lakh litres and two water tanks with 50,000 litres capacity.

However, it is yet to take up works on cleaning the tanks. So, people fear the unclean water could lead to epidemics rearing their head in the city.

The issue rocked the CMC meeting held recently, but the council is yet to take concrete measures to clean the water tanks. Recently, construction of a 10 lakh litre water tank was taken up at Karivadararajana Hill. But, it is yet to be completed. Residents complain that the CMC has turned a blind eye to the issue.

Work on the construction of underground drainage is expected to begin in April. At present, the city has open drains, which have been clogged due to dumping of waste. As a result, sewage water is not flowing out of the city. The CMC has failed to use bleaching powder to clean the drains.

Clogged drains can be seen at Ramasamudra, Galipura, Railway Layout, Nayakara Beedhi and Uppara Beedhi.

The only work done by CMC is issuing of advisories urging the public to take measures to prevent epidemics, say residents. But, it has shirked the responsibility of taking cleaning the drains and water tanks.

Rajashekar, a resident of the city, said the CMC should undertake the work immediately. He said the CMC would be blamed if the city faces the threat of epidemics this summer.
