Palike may present inflated budget

Last Updated 25 March 2012, 19:22 IST

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is learnt to have planned a mega budget for the City, close on the heels of State government’s allocation of Rs 6,895 crore to the civic body.

According to sources, the budget for the year 2012-13, for the City may be inflated to over Rs 10,000 crore. However, the move to present such a mega budget has not gone down well with the Palike top brass, considering the financial crunch faced by the BBMP. “It appears that the BBMP Commissioner wants the budget to be trimmed by Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 crore.”

Deputy Mayor S Harish said the budget should be realistic and it should be a reduced estimate from the previous one. “However, the budget is still being drafted and a clear picture will emerge once the administration completes the planning,” added Harish.

Further, with the State government ‘entrusting’ the BBMP with new projects, including five new signal-free corridors, construction of eight parking complexes across the City and concretisation of 27 roads, BBMP may have to scuttle its own new projects. It can be recalled that in November 2011, the BBMP decided to shelve most new projects due to ‘no funds’ till March 2012.
