Feeling humiliated after an ‘insensitive’ Uttar Pradesh police refused to lodge a complaint regarding an alleged attempt to molest his daughter by an influential person of his village, a man committed suicide in Kanpur.

According to police sources, Deendayal Trivedi, a resident of Katahan village in the district had complained to the police that Mahesh Dwivedi had tried to molest his daughter a few days back.

The police, however, did not lodge his report. “The police did not lodge the report, not only that, they even tried to coerce my father into reaching a compromise with the culprit and not to insist upon action over the complaint,” said Shivam, Deeendayal’s son.

Shivam said influential villagers later forced a written compromise and a copy of the same was given to the police, with the intimation that the matter should be treated as closed. Deendayal, however, was not at happy with the compromise. He had also become an object of ridicule in the village, as the compromise was forced on him. “My father felt deeply humiliated,” Shivam said.

Police claim that they sent a team to the village to investigate the matter after receiving the complaint but none of the parties was available on that day. “Two days later we received a written compromise and we thought that the two sides have settled the matter amicably”, they said.

Shivam alleged the culprit had threatened his father with the abduction of his daughter. He also feels that Deendayal might have been killed by Mahesh.

Police officials, however, said Deendayal committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree a few meters away from his home on Monday.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and a hunt has been launched to nab Mahesh, who has been absconding, police said.
