Bardhan calls for reviving Third Front

National general secretary of Communist Party of India A B Bardhan on Tuesday gave a clarion call to all Left parties, including the CPM, CPI(ML), RSP and the Forward Bloc, to join hands and forge a new coalition as an alternative to the Congress and the BJP.

“We will have to unite and revive the Third Front,” the veteran CPI leader said while addressing a mammoth crowd on the inaugural day of the party’s five-day national convention at the historic Gandhi Maidan here.

Slamming the economic policies of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, Bardhan said the common man was frustrated over the price rise and unbridled inflation. “Yeh punji-patiyaon ki sarkar hai (This is a capitalist-backed government). Therefore, it can’t provide you relief from rising prices,” averred Bardhan, while lamenting that the BJP was also no different.

The 21st convention was attended by top CPI leaders, including Atul Kumar Anjaan, D Raja, Gurudas Gupta and Amarjit Kaur.

Gupta took a dig at the Nitish regime and said the high growth rate shown in Bihar was a jugglery of figures. “The fact is that only crime graph has increased in this state,” he said amid thunderous applause. Earlier, thousands of party cadres took out a procession on the main thoroughfares in the state capital, thereby bringing traffic to a halt.
