Vedic village controversy;Alleged land shark among 6 arrested

North 24 Parganas Superintendent of Police Rahul Srivastav said the alleged land shark Gaffar and his accomplices were arrested from Indas in Bankura district.

Vedic Village, a luxury resort on the city fringe, was burnt down by a mob protesting against forcible land acquisition for it on August 23 opening up a land scandal which has led to the shelving of the ambitious IT project by the government in the area in which Infosys and Wipro were to set up their units.

The land issue had snowballed into a major crisis forcing the Land and Land Reforms Minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah to demand scrapping of the IT project. Housing, Land and Land Reforms, Urban Development and PWD departments had also favoured scrapping of the project.
