MCC drive clears roadside eateries

Mobile hotels evicted in morning; chaat centres stay away from business after dusk

In a major drive on Friday, gangmen attached to Mysore City Corporation (MCC) evicted roadside eateries in the heart of the city.

The drive launched at 10.30 am from Town Hall under the leadership of health officer Dr Nagaraj removed tables, chairs, gas stoves and also LPG cylinders, besides eatables in platter and other articles before unloading it in the waiting tipper lorries.

The gangmen in uniform ably assisted by Dhanush, emergency squad of the city corporation raided similar mobile eateries and also carts selling cut fruits on Chandragupta road, Krishna Vilas road, Dewan’s road near J K Grounds, Olympia talkies road among others.

The health officer told Deccan Herald the drive launched in the wake of epidemics will be taken out as and when the situation warrants. He reiterated that all types of roadside eateries and also beverages are banned till further orders from the commissioner.

Over 150 mobile eateries were removed in the drive which resumed in the evening zeroing in on mainly chaat centres, who form the chunk of eateries after dusk. The officer said most had remained off from the day’s business, fearing the drive.

As witnessed by this newspaper, a couple running a food joint on Krishnavilas road, behind commercial tax office, cursed the gangmen for evicting them without prior notice.

When the health officer told them about newspapers carrying related articles in the morning, the woman shot back saying- where’s the time to read, when we have to open the hotel to eke out a living.

Her eyes welled up when the gangmen loaded all her belongings into the lorry.

Another food vendor, who is a regular during evening on the same road, was heard telling his men over phone to stop preparing ingredients for the evening.

The articles seized during the drive were finally unloaded at the Town Hall.
