UP Cong committee may be dissolved

Last Updated 06 April 2012, 18:53 IST

The two-day analysis of Congress poll debacle in Uttar Pradesh may lead to dissolution of UP Congress Committee in the state.

At the concluding session of his two-day meeting with party functionaries from UP, Gandhi floated a question: “Should UPCC be dissolved?”

Sources said, the suggestion to dissolve the unit was favoured by several party members.

Gandhi also lamented over issue of minorities sub-quota being misrepresented by party leaders, which, according to him, sent a message that the Congress is trying to appease backward Muslims only.

Referring to statements by Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal and Union Law Minister Salman Khursheed, legislators had complained that the one-upmanship of Union ministers and Central leaders ruined the party’s prospects in the state.

Gandhi, assured that party will act against anyone responsible for weakening the party.

"Don't expect a kid gloves treatment from now on. It will be firm steps," Gandhi said, adding that steps will be taken to reorganise UPCC.

“Rahul has said that whatever is required will be made to strengthen the party,” UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, one of the 28 successful MLAs said after meeting the Gandhi scion.

Gandhi's meetings with 150-odd party candidates, who lost Assembly election despite securing over 20,000 votes,  showed that weak organisation, controversy over minorities sub-quota in jobs and union ministers speaking "out of turn" were among the reasons for party's rout in UP.
