Even though gold prices have increased drastically, the rush for the precious metal hasn’t abated. City jewellers opined that the demand for gold has only increased more than two-fold as compared to last year on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.

Several jewellers opened shops as early as 6.30 am and were yet to close at 9.30 pm. They said customers started visiting the shops early in the morning. Gold price had touched at Rs 2,687 on Monday and was sold at Rs 2,710 per gram on Tuesday.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Malabar Gold marketing manager Dileep Hegde said, “The response was more than double as compared to last year. We opened shop at 7.30 am and there were few customers until 10 am. After 10 am, the rush continued even during lunch hours.”

He said a large number of people had opted for gold coins as an investment option. Others had opted for divine collections and other gold ornaments.

Raghavendra of Jos Alukkas said they opened at around 6.30 am and by 7.15 am a good number of customers visited. Raghavendra said sales were tripled as compared to the previous years.
Even showrooms selling two-wheelers and four-wheelers witnessed a large number of customers taking delivery of their vehicles.

Several gold stores had offered huge discounts on purchase of jewellery worth more than Rs 10,000 to attract customers.
