40 naxals active in State: DG&IGP

About 40 naxals are estimated to be active in the State, according to Director General and Inspector General of Police, A R Infant.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Infant said that there were reports of naxals from other states operating in Karnataka.

“It is true that hand bills with Tamil text were found during anti-naxal operations. However, there is no authentic information on the activities of ultras from other states in Karnataka or their nexus with those from our State,” he said.

The DG&IGP handed over various documents extending benefits under the naxal rehabilitation programme to Koranakote Krishna, who surrendered on May 16, 2011.

Krishna was allotted a house, two acres of land and given a cash of Rs one lakh. It had also been recommended to waive Rs one lakh loan he had borrowed from District Central Co-operative Bank and withdraw all the cases against him.

Infant said naxals should realise that there was no room for violence in a democratic system of governance. He said the insurgents should shun violence and join mainstream.

‘Come out of forests’

“It is better to lead a life of courage and self esteem in society rather than fearing for life in forests. Come out of forests. You cannot achieve anything from there,” rehabilitated naxal Koranakote Krishna appealed to his ex-comrades.

Krishna told reporters that he was with the team of naxals for about a year and wanted to return home after his mother passed away.  “I was threatened that police will kill me if I returned. But I was unable to restrain myself. I just walked away,” he said. Krishna said he has decided to stay in Shimoga since the ultras may trouble him if he settled at his native place. When questioned whether police would give him protection, Krishna said, “I can’t rely on them. I have to safeguard myself.”
