The managing director of Swordfish Design, which has been assigned to beautify six junctions of the City, said the overburdened jumbo near Cantonment at Vasanthanagar was meant to highlight the fast-disappearing creatures from the Earth.

Deccan Herald on Wednesday carried a report on the overburdened elephant. To clarify this, Roshan Netalkar, the managing director of the firm, said the theme of the sculpture was Animal Kingdom.

Roshan said, “People did not understand our concept fully. The ‘animal tower’ was constructed to highlight that some animals are heading for extinction. By putting the animals on each other, we want to show the lack of space as reason behind the disappearance of certain species from the planet.”

He did agree that a private cement company, which sponsored the project, wanted its cement to be utilised only to show that it has concern for nature and art. Roshan said the firm has put up ‘The Tree of Life’ at Mehkri Circle, ‘The Power of Four’ on Race Course Road, ‘Growth’ at Chalukya Circle, ‘Evolution’ at Freedom Park and ‘Continuum’ at Janata Dal Circle. He said the cost of the project was Rs two crore.
