The Shanthinagar Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) which was supposed to share the burden of the Majestic bus terminal, has become a hub of traffic chaos and congestion.

.
The TTMC was initially constructed to accommodate BMTC buses. But with a portion of the KSRTC bus terminal in Majestic being demolished for Namma Metro’s underground station, the Shanthinagar TTMC has now doubled up as a station for KSRTC Volvo buses and private buses plying towards Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

The TTMC has now transformed into a traffic ‘mismanagement’ centre, and to such an extent that a parking space constructed for private vehicles has become an additional platform to accommodate the burgeoning traffic of buses plying in and out of Shanthinagar.

Madappa, a traffic constable manning the junction, says traffic congestion increases especially during weekends and holidays.

Around 8 pm every day, there is bedlam in the bus depot, when several buses leave the terminal for their overnight trips. Also, lack of parking space means buses are forced to be parked outside the depot.

Bus drivers lament that the TTMC was never meant to hold such a large number of buses.
“It will be much easier for commuters, if separate bus terminals were made for BMTC, intra and inter-state buses. Because of congestion in the bus terminal, we are forced to park on the roads leading to traffic jams,” says Kondappa, a Rajahamsa bus driver.

Passengers take several minutes to find the right platform to board their buses at the terminal. Suresh, who was trying to board a bus to Trichy, took more than 45 minutes to find his bus. He was sent to four different platforms before he managed to find the right one.

Ajit Kumar, a frequent traveller between Bangalore and Chennai, says the buses are not parked on the same platform every week. “So we end up searching for the bus every week,” he says.
