Basavashri award to P T Usha

Addressing mediapersons here, he said that the prestigious award will be given to the ‘Payyoli Express’, as P T Usha is famously called, at a function at the old Middle school grounds on September 27 at 6.30 pm during the Sharana Samskruthi Utsava.

The award includes a cash of Rs one lakh and a citation.

The award was instituted in 1997 and awardees include Beldal Mutt seer, Dr H Sudharshan, social worker Anna Hajare, activist Medha Patkar, Buddist guru Dalai Lama, revolutionary singer Gaddar, Dr Vandana Shiva, eco friendly agriculturist Subhash Palekar, film actor, MP Shabana Azmi, social activist Swamy Agnivesh and well known police officer Krian Bedi.

P T Usha who was born in Payyoli village in Kerala on June 27, 1964 had set a record by completing 400 mtrs hurdles in 55.42 seconds at the Olympics held in Los Angeles in 1984. She has received many awards for her contribution to sports.
