Cop crushed to death by criminals

A 42-year-old Delhi Police constable was killed and a Home Guard was injured when suspected criminals in a mini-truck hit their motorcycle in the Bharat Nagar area of north west Delhi early on Friday morning.

 The deceased has been identified as Naresh Kumar from Rajasthan’s Alwar district. He was on duty at a police picket near the Bharat Nagar police station. The injured, 25-year-old Shankar,  is a resident of Kalyanpuri.

They were patrolling the streets at around 2:45 am when a message flashed on the wireless system warned that some criminals were passing through the Netaji Subhash Place in a mini-truck.

Hot chase

“Police personnel from different posts chased them for two to three km until they reached the police station. There, Naresh and Shankar sped after the truck on a motorcycle and overtook it,” a senior police official said. “The criminals rammed the mini-truck into the motorcycle. Naresh suffered head injuries and died on the spot,” the official added.

Shankar sustained critical injuries and was admitted to Shankar Lal Hospital for treatment.

Naresh was an ex-serviceman and had joined the Delhi Police in 2008. He is survived by his wife and two children, Sachin, 17, and Anjali,12.
